Lesson #4
March 13th 2020
Hey Jeff! Above you can see a good way to get into dynamic posture for a full swing shot. An easy way to check this before every shot is to take your right hand off the club once your setup to the ball and place it on your thigh. If your fingertips are touching the tops of your knees, then you are setup correctly! Adjust accordingly if not.
This was a test to see how your dominant arm and hand (right) want to move naturally. You’ll notice that your right hand likes to favor the side-on position while also favoring the top side. This tells us how to place your right hand on the golf club so that it may work more efficiently with your body’s natural movements. So always make sure your right hand grip is on the club so that side of the golf grip is in contact with roughly the middle of your palm.
More reps here trying to get the lead arm in a better position at the top of the swing. Keep working on hinging the club more towards your right shoulder to start your backswing to help get the club to move more up and out.
Really good result here with an iron after the backswing work. However you may notice how quickly your old backswing path shows itself without the feedback device. Lots of reps will be required to make this change last! Slow motion reps and proper feedback are vital to this!
After we got your posture and grip in check so after that we started down the road to reshaping your backswing so that it sets you up for a better more consistent downswing. Here you can see you’re working with an alignment stick in the ground as a feedback tool to help you feel a more “on-plane” backswing.
Here is the jist of our lesson in two pictures. Using a younger Rory McIlroy as our model, you can see where the changes need to happen. More outside and up takeaway feel to get you more on plane with a higher lead arm position at the top that intersects through the shoulders.
We finished off with some driver swings where we worked on your angle of attack with a ball that’s tee’d up vs on the ground. Simply putting a headcover a few inches in front of the ball is an easy way to work on your angle of attack. When the ball is tee’d up, we need to sweep it off the that rather than delivery the club down and through the ball like our irons. A little hovering of the club off the ground is a great trigger move to start your swing and to feel a better connection to the angle of attack required. Other than that just make sure the ball position is up in your stance and you stay behind the ball and release the hell out of it!
