Lesson #1
February 21st 2019
Hey Chad! Here’s what we covered in our 1st lesson. Our main concerns after seeing your swing on video was the right arm not staying straight in your backswing and the lack of hip rotation at impact. We also talked a little about setup and how often many players shoulders and/or hips drift too far to the left which will cause slices, pulls, fat, thin shots.
From down the line we can see a very vertical swing plane that is too far on top of the ideal swing plane. The shaft is almost vertical, or steep, which makes it hard for us to rotate and still hit the ball, so the body has to stand up out of posture and manipulate the hands to be able to be successful from your position. Your tendency to keep your back foot down through impact will make it harder to have more open hips.
So we addressed the left arm position first because without that key fundamental we cannot have a consistent swing. We made some left arm only swings to help generate some new feels. This also makes it nearly impossible to flip your hands at it so you can learn how to rotate better.
Here’s some examples of myself and World #1 Dustin Johnson. You can see the left arm staying straight on the way back and still straight into impact with the shaft leaning forward at impact. Back foot is shifting forward and up to help create force(speed) and help swing direction go towards the target. At impact my shoulders are pointing down my target line or slightly open like DJ but my hips are very left (open) of that target line. This is how we create space for hands to swing so we may stay in our posture and rotate. If the hips do not open a certain amount then the body must stand up and flip the hands because there isn’t enough room. It’s almost like trying to swing while sitting down….
At the end of our lesson it was looking much better and slowly coming together. Much better job of keeping the left arm straight and getting the weight to shift towards the target and hips more open. Practice this for at least 2 weeks and I’ll see you soon!
