Lesson #2

March 12th 2019

After discussing your struggles and concerns on not getting the ball airborne I explained how a stock low pitch shot will help. This makes you feel what ideal impact is like for full swing. Weight transferred forward with the left wrist leading ahead of the clubface never letting it pass the hands. In this series of photos we can see at setup that most of your weight is forward and the shaft is leaning forward as well. Then you do a great job of maintaining that angle at impact. I’d like to see your finish with your hands above the clubhead where as in this swing you can see the clubhead out raced your hands. This tells me there most likely was some flipping at impact. (If you cant see the pictures well enough just click on them for an enlarged view)

Here’s a demonstration of the stock low pitch positions we’re striving for.

Here’s the same low pitch shot from down the line. From this angle we mainly focus on your swing plane. We can see you do a great job keeping the club on plane on the backswing and the downswing. Much better finish on this shot with the clubhead below the hands. You did very well with this exercise!

Here’s a look at your full swing with an iron. You do a much better job keeping that left arm straight while shifting your weight to your back foot on the backswing. At impact we can see a much better arm, wrist, and shaft angle all starting to match up in a straight line. I’d like to see your hips more open at impact so keep doing your step drills and think baseball! Your backfoot likes to stay planted through impact which can hinder hip flexibility.

Here’s your full swing with the driver. One thing I noticed that we may address in the next lesson is how your right arm is working on the downswing. Your arm has a lot of separation from your torso which can cause a lot of inconsistent strikes (fat, thin, early release). Other than that still looking good. We can see more of the lack of hip rotation via your flexed lead leg.

Some good examples for you to reference and strive towards. Right arm staying in tight helps maintain forward shaft lean.

From down the line we can see you stay on plane very nicely. Not a lot to critique here other than the lack of hip rotation. Keep doing this!

From down the line another good swing that stays on plane nicely. Again we see the back foot staying planted which will hurt hip flexibility. Throwing clubs and step drills will help this.

Hips open at impact increases your clubhead speed, makes releasing the clubhead later feel natural, and makes it so the player has an easier time maintaining posture. (Again click on photos for closer look)

This is a drill that helps you understand what the feel and look is of our goal. These are 3 different throws all showing the same good stuff. That inverse line formed by the clubhead trailing behind the left wrist and arm. This is achieved by changing your thought process to thinking about swinging at/towards the target instead of down/at the ball! Throw that club at your target on every swing!
