Lesson #1(not really)
April 21st 2019
From down the line you can see a good functional swing that is a little on top of the plane going back and then shallows out in transition. But because your backswing is so vertical your hand path doesn’t get deep enough and then coming down is much steeper and that means your chest has to slow down and the clubhead goes under the plane slightly which causes fat and thin shots. From face we can see your head move quite a bit down on the backswing. You can see the progression start at the end of your downswing and finish well below the setup line by impact. Wrist angles and release are good through impact but the head movement is slowing your chest rotation down by locking your neck back. All you need to work on right now is keeping your head steady, slow the hips down and speed the chest up, and more lead arm depth in the backswing. This will make your misses much more consistent and ball contact more solid.
Here’s you compared to Tommy Fleetwood at impact. Your hips are much more open as you can tell by your trail leg pushing forward very early. This is why your chest slows down through impact. Your athletic mind has compensated the fast hips by slowing the chest down.
So we made some setup changes to improve your balance and help prevent any early extension. It also helps encourage proper spine tilts once the right amount of lead arm depth is acquired. We can see your depth improved a bit throughout the lesson. See Rory below at the Players this year for reference.
Here’s a swing at the end of our lesson. The setup+lead arm depth changes made your takeaway and backswing on plane for longer, which then influences the way the club moves on the downswing. We can see better positions on the way down with the club exiting the impact zone with less flip and a better more balanced finish position. I would focus on only one thing paired with the closer setup each time. For example head movement+setup, slower hips+setup, faster chest+setup, lead arm depth+setup.
On course we can see the old swing come out which is normal. You need more practice reps at half speed for the changes to take affect. Your hips rotated so fast that your trail arm got stuck behind your hip and you had to flip the face through impact. That’s why you hit a pull draw. See Tommy’s swing below for some good references. Watch his chest in constant motion with a very passive clubface.
