Lesson #1
February 23rd 2021
The biggest fault in your golf swing that I noticed in our first lesson was how you were swinging on your back foot on the downswing. This will cause a club path that is always too far to the left and will produce slices and pulls. Notice the visual representation on the right between your impact position and that of PGA Tour veteran Retief Goosen. It’s important to get the downswing started with the lower body and transfer our weight to the lead side in order to produce a better swing path towards the target.
We got right to work with a drill that will help you feel proper weight transfer and sequencing in the downswing. If you think like baseball, you start the down swing from the ground up. Keep the hands and arms relaxed and let the feet, legs, and hips be the main source of power that triggers the downswing. On the right you can see the before and after once you did this drill for a few minutes. Still room for improvement but already much better!
Here’s a swing with a golf ball while you were still doing the drill. Watch PGA Tour veteran Freddy Couples on the right as he showcases a great example of what we’re working towards in your own swing. Skip to 1:25 in the video to see the slow motion analysis.
To finish this lesson we worked on your alignment and routine walking up to the ball. I noticed right away that your alignment was extremely far to the right of your intended target which revealed what most likely is the root problem to your severe left swing path. Put a stick or club on the ground pointing towards your target when you practice to help fix this issue. Try and pick a spot 6 inches in front of the ball so it will be easier to line up your club face and body to the target. Great work so far!
