Because of the extreme forearm rotation your right shoulder gets stuck behind your body in the downswing. PGA Tour player Nick Watney demonstrating a tucked, connected right arm that has not extended out too early allowing ball first contact to be a breeze.

Your old takeaway also caused your shoulders to flatten and lose their tilt which will require a compensation on the downswing. This takeaway will also improve your hand path so that you may feel less need of any compensations.

A much more on plane swing that will have less need to make compensations due to a improper takeaway. The snapshots on the right are your down swing after and before the lesson. Don’t be fooled! Those are taken at the same position frame, early extension(over the top) vs better trail arm conditions for a stable face that is driven by pivot not throwing the arms.

Lesson keys:

  • Clubhead stays outside the hands during the takeaway until the shaft is parallel to the ground

  • Once the shaft reaches parallel to the ground the right arm folds and the wrists hinge the club up vertically

  • Rehearse impact feel with pressure forward and shaft leaning forward (Matthew Wolff)

  • Changes need to be made at 50% speed for at least a few weeks

  • Fast tempo will create tension and tension encourages steep shaft plane. Keep the tempo smooth and relaxed for a more on plane swing
