Lesson #2
April 23rd 2019
From this view we can see your head movement like we talked about. Your head moves back and up on your backswing and then you have to lunge back down toward the ball to return to your original position. That lunge move makes your swing plane very “over the top” of the ideal swing plane. (click on images to enlarge)
Here we can see your backswing is quite a bit under the ideal swing plane and then you come down very on top of it. With driver this move will make your misses go to the right and not fly very far. (click on images to enlarge)
Our first drill was to throw a club as hard as you could at a target. This improved your wrist/arm angles going into impact. Lots of golfers try to “hit” the ball and therefore release the club early at the ball rather than swing towards the target in front of them and releasing at the target. Your first swing after this drill resulted in much better impact positions. (click on images to enlarge)
Here’s a good example of proper arm/wrist angles as you approach impact. This is Brooke Henderson a top 10 world class LPGA Tour player. (click on images to enlarge)
Next, we worked on some better trail arm form. Placing a headcover under the trail armpit and swinging without letting it drop provides good feel for how short and compact the arms should feel throughout the swing. This creates effortless power and much better consistency since there are less moving parts. (click on images to enlarge)
Very good positions here that once you practice a lot of small and slow chips it will eventually show up in your full swing. You hold the wrist angle nicely and release into a straight line finish. Below is Brooke from earlier demonstrating the same qualities you were practicing.
From this view we can see both your backswing and downswing plane improve a lot with the headcover under your trail arm. The club stays on the line much more throughout your swing. Your backswing is also shorter which makes controlling the clubface easier and with a proper strike the ball goes the same distance, if not further! (click on images to enlarge)
This was one of your last swings at the end of the lesson. No headcover but the positions are the same as if you had it there. Much better, more on plane and good follow through! Below is MinJee Lee top LPGA Tour Pro. Notice how short her backswing is compared to yours and how flat her left wrist is at the top. She comes down into impact maintaining that wrist angle and releases it at the target much like your chipping motion on the left. Shoulders pointing to target with arms forming a triangle and club splitting it down the middle.(click image to enlarge)
