Lesson #1
February 28th 2019
This photo illustrates a great before and after since our first session together. We worked on more step drills to help open your hips on the downswing which will in turn create more speed and more forward shaft lean at impact. Remember to start with your feet together and then step forward as the club is moving backwards and push into the ground as hard as you can. (feel like your crushing a soda can under your foot) Your swing is moving in the right direction! (click on photo for closer view)
Some more great before and after pictures, “B” for before and “A” for after. After a few setup fixes and better understanding of how to use the ground to generate speed you can see noticeable difference. More on plane throughout your swing and the club gets in a much better position that allows you to rotate and push forward without stalling out and flipping your hands to hit the ball. On course we talked about how important the pre-shot routine is and how it frames the correct state of mind to give you the best chance possible to execute the shot. Here we can see even though your focus was on the target your new swing still came out to play. One quick note is that at the top of your backswing here we can see that if I put a ball between your forearms it would most likely fall out. Keep working on keeping those forearms tight together. My routine that I shared with you is:
1. Asses the lie, wind, trouble, uphill, downhill
2. After selecting the shot I want to hit I ask myself, "What would this shot look like?"
3. Hold onto that image in your mind while you take 1 practice swing with a simple swing thought/concept.
4. Take 1 more practice swing where you feel that swing thought instead of thinking about it.
5. Walk into the ball focusing on your intermediate target a few inches in front of the ball.
6. Align clubface to that spot and then align your body to the clubface.
7. Take 1 last look at target to refresh what the shot will look like.
8. Pull the trigger!
You may copy my same routine or manufacture your own based on the information I've shared with you!
Your 3 simple swing thoughts to help stop your bad tendencies:
1. Squeeze imaginary ball with forearms throughout the swing
2. Smash the can under your foot to start your downswing(Step Drill)
3. Steady Head
Day-to-day you can rotate between these until it starts clicking again.
Speaking of Day, here’s an interview with Jason Day on his pre-shot routine. Enjoy!
