Lesson #3

April 19th 2019

We started this lesson off by putting 2 tee’s in the ground about 6 inches apart forming a straight line towards your target. I want you to practice hitting both tees in an effort to make the club attack the ball at a more downward angle so that the ball goes higher and farther. We can see your swing stays on plane and you made some good strikes into the turf sending the tee flying! Don’t forget to click on the pictures if you have trouble seeing them.

This is where the fun really started….Above on the far left is your swing with the intention of swinging at the ball. The picture to the right of that is your swing with the intention of swinging towards the target. Notice the difference? By throwing clubs, or imagining you’re going to throw it at the target, rather than the ball, we instantly start to achieve all those positions in the golf swing that the professionals have. See Danny Lee and myself achieving those exact same positions.

After a change of concept on how to swing, we moved on to another drill that helps you feel the correct shaft angle through the hitting zone so that you can start hitting it more solid. You hit some half swing punch shots, like you’re punching out of the trees on the course, and you can see the picture on the left shows much better positions are achieved while using this drill. Above is an example of myself hitting a short pitch shot which produces a very good feel for the correct positions.

Here are more examples from some of the best in the world. You should see the things we were working on today. Their clubhead doesn’t move past their hands until after impact, not before.

We finished off with a few driver swings. Opposite of the iron swing where I was having you work on a more downward strike into the ball, the driver swing we want to hit the ball as the club is moving upwards because it’s tee’d up. In order to work on this I put a ball about 6-8 inches in front of the tee’d ball you’re trying to hit. If you can avoid hitting the ball in front then you have successfully hit the tee’d ball on the upswing. Our setup changes slightly between iron and driver as well. We want our right side of our body lower than the left so that our body lines are pointing more up towards the sky. The idea with driver is to launch it high with very little spin. The more you swing up on it the more launch you’ll have and the less spin you’ll generate. We can see you still like to release early after the drills we tried so just keep working on it and I’ll see you next time!
