Lesson #4
March 11th 2020
Hey Scott! In this lesson we worked on making sure your setup and alignments we’re still in check. You can see above how your posture tends to have too much knee bend sometimes so always make sure you use the left hand on your thigh, fingertips touching the top of your knees trick.
Here you’re working the step-drill. This is a good drill to understand how to generate more power from the ground which will also give you increased hip speed and a faster “clearing” action. The faster the hips clear the more room our arms have to stay extended through the shot. Notice how towards the end of the video you really start to load the lead leg into the ground and then push off the ground to generate more speed!
Same exercise as the last video but going full speed now. Hitting the sticks give your brain good feel feedback so you don’t need to use a lot of thought into how to do it. The goal is to make the sticks touch by the time you reach impact.
You we’re hitting some bombs at this end of this lesson haha. Same stuff with the driver but ball position needs to be forward in the stance and really make sure your trail arm (left arm) is lower than your lead arm (right arm). This will allow for proper shoulder alignment. You had a tendency for the trail arm to reach out too far and then the shoulder pops out and then the shoulders are aiming too far right. If you start slicing the ball I would check your shoulder alignment first before you look elsewhere!
Continuing the hip clear theme. This exercise just made you see the goal in a visual way and further helps you feel the sensation in your own way. By the time you reach impact, your hips should be at least 45 degrees rotated through the shot.
Great feel rehearsals here that you can incorporate into your pre-shot routine before you hit a shot on the course. This helps you prime your body for the feel that you’re working towards. Hips and chest open to the target with weight transferred to the lead side and shaft of the club leaning towards the target. Watch Matthew Wolff below to see some similarities ;).
I want you to just focus on his feet, legs, and hips here. Watch how they move and how the weight is shifting, the knees changing flex, the hips turning back and through, all while staying very centered over the golf ball.
Lesson Keys
Check posture at setup, shoulder alignment, ball position.
Full and complete hip turn back (finish your backswing) before you start down.
Get hips “cleared” more coming down into impact. Getting your back foot off the ground earlier will help make this easier. Practice the step drill.
